Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit (TCAT) provides public transit service to Cornell University, the City of Ithaca, Tompkins County and parts of Tioga County. TCAT was created in 1996 by coordinating three transit operators - Ithaca Transit, CU Transit and Tomtran - and the agencies were officially merged into one entity in 2004. TCAT currently runs 33 fixed routes; operating 22 hours a day, seven days a week and 360 days a year, only shutting down five days a year to allow all of TCAT's employees to observe major holidays. Since inception, TCAT has operated 21 New Flyer-built and 2 ARBOC-built buses.
