Metro Transit (Minneapolis)

The Metropolitan Council, commonly abbreviated Met Council or Metro Council, is the regional governmental agency and metropolitan planning organization in Minnesota serving the Twin Cities seven-county metropolitan area. The transportation division of the Met Council includes:

  • Metro Transit which is the largest fixed-route public transit service provider for the Twin Cities Metropolitan area. Metro Transit operates 123 bus routes (66 of which are local routes and 51 are express routes), 2 bus rapid transit lines, 2 light rail lines, and the Northstar commuter rail line.
  • Metropolitan Transportation Services (MTS) which is the operator of ADA transit service and oversees contracted routes.
  • Transit Link is shared-ride public transportation for the Twin Cities metro area where regular route transit service is infrequent or unavailable. It's for trips that can't be accomplished on regular transit routes alone.
  • Since inception, the Met Council Transportation Divisions (and its contractors) has operated 1,840 GILLIG-built buses.
