Notes: Some F40 Locomotives were turned into Non-Powered Control Unit (NPCU), colloquially known as "cabbages" (a portmanteau of "cab" and "baggage"). These are life-expired F40 locomotives with the diesel engine removed and the engine compartment converted into baggage storage space. The cab and controls are retained to work with another diesel loco operating on the opposite end of a train consist. A "90" was placed in front of the original numbers as part of this particular program; Locomotive #406 was refurbished for Amtrak's 40th anniversary exhibit train. It was converted to an NPCU to enable push-pull operation of the exhibit train and an HEP generator was installed in the engine room to supply auxiliary electricity. Unlike other NPCUs, #406 retains it's original number and resembles an operational F40PH externally.
